Lambeth. Jesse N. Age 19. Residence Cooper's Hill, Mo., nativity Missouri. Enlisted Sept. 23,
    • I believe this is Jesse son of Joseph and Rhoda for the following reasons. Jesse or heirs of Jesse are not listed in his father's probate file dated February, 1884. The assumption is he had died without issue prior to this date. Searching marriage, cemetery, death and census records provide no links to a Jesse Lambeth of the correct age and location; the last record is the 1860 census when he is living with his parents.
At first I dismissed this connection because he is listed with the Iowa 5th Calvary, however upon research I found the Iowa 5th was a combination of several units including the Osage Independent Rifles-Company M, being incorporated into the Iowa 5th by a general order. An another connection is George Tackett, husband to Jesse's sister Mary also enlisted on the same day.

*The 1860 census list Jesse A, the war record Jesse N, without looking at the original military file I would guess it was A and translated incorrectly. In my experience an old style writing of an A and N can look very similar.

Below is listed some of the information to help make the connections listed above.

      Osage Independent Rifles-Company M

      From: http://www.scriptoriumnovum.com/c/p/kidd.html
The Fifth Iowa Cavalry regiment was unique in the Union army, in that it was formed by the union of individual companies raised in four different states. The majority of the men came from Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, but a smaller contingent rallied from Missouri.
Company M was enlisted in Osage County, Missouri, by Captain J.K. Kidd, and was mustered into the service at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on September 14, 1861. Its original self-designation was the "Osage Independent Mounted Rifles." It joined the "Curtis Horse" Regiment at Benton Barracks, St Louis, Missouri, on January 4, 1862. Like many other members of the regiment, Kidd was an Irish immigrant.
