Nancy and Richard Sappington

I went to the New Salem Baptist Church and Cemetery yesterday to see the Sappington graves.  It is quite ironic my family is buried there since I have driven past the church and cemetery hundreds of times never thinking I had family buried there.  My mother always told me her Sappington’s were from the Arrow Rock area.  A bit of searching this month has proven they were in the Ashland, MO area as early as 1821.  Nancy and her husband Richard lived in St. Louis before the migration to Boone County, MO.  Richard died in 1811 and a copy of his probate file is on microfilm at the Missouri State Archives.  His estate was probated in November of 1811.  Some time between 1811 and July of 1821, when we find Nancy as a taxpayer in Boone County, MO, the family moved from St. Louis.  Foster Sappington, son of Nancy and Richard, was married in St. Louis in 1818, so I believe the family was still in St. Louis at that time.  I have just now started to research the Sappington side of the family and I am sure there are many more knowledgeable researchers out there.  Please contact me if you would like to share information.  I would be happy to copy Richard’s probate file for anyone who is interested.  You can see in the photo below a plaque has been attached to Nancy’s tombstone.  The plaque states Richard is buried in Coldwater Cemetery in St. Louis, however I can not find a listing for Richard in the cemeteries transcription records. 1811 was along time ago and perhaps the stone has weathered beyond reading.  I can only assume the family members had good documentation of the information before they attached a plaque to her tombstone.  I am going to contact the Boone County Historical Society this week to see if there is a file or other information on Nancy.

Rarely do I find genealogy puzzle pieces just lying around waiting to be picked up, this time I did!  The Sappington’s are going to spoil me, with all the information within just a few miles my home it’s going to be hard to get back to those challenging families who never owned land, moved every census year, did not keep family bibles and spoke with a heavy accent! I am convinced my husbands Behen family members were victims of frequent alien abductions.
