Carved in Stone, Jesse Lambeth
Jesse Benjamin Lambeth was born May 20, 1874 in Stony Point, Osage County, Missouri. He was the son of Wesley H. Lambeth and Eveline Rand Lambeth. Jesse was called Ben by family members and is pictured below. He is the fourth boy (seated) from the left. He is labeled as Ben in the photo. Jesse died February 26, 1902 and is buried in Laurel Oak Cemetery in Windsor, Missouri.

While visiting the Laurel Oak Cemetery yesterday I noticed the inscription on his stone references him as husband. I did not know Jesse was married; he died so young I never gave a marriage much thought. I also had never found a marriage record for Jesse while looking for Lambeth marriages. But there it was carved in stone. I pulled out the family bible pages and again there it is “Ben died Wednesday Feb. 26th 1902 at 6 a.m. aged 27 years, 7 mo 6 days married May 27th1900″. I went to the 1900 census to follow up on this and J.B. and Tollie D. Lambert are living with Joseph and Amanda (Lambeth) McKnolly, Jesse Benjamin’s sister and brother-in-law. Jesse is listed as brother-in-law, but Tollie is listed as sister. It is obvious from the census Jesse and Tollie are married to each other but why she is not listed as sister-in-law? The only logical conclusion I can see is Tollie was the sister of Joseph McKnolly and wife of Jesse. I did a search of online Osage, Maries and Henry county marriages and I can not find a record of any Tollie or Jesse Benjamin Lambeth.
Instead of weeding and watering the garden I am going to the archives to check for a marriage record. Maybe they had a child and there is a birth record listing parents. I will also check Wesley’s probate file, part of his estate payment may have gone to Tollie. Finally, Tollie seems like an odd name, but the census takers writing was pretty clear on this; maybe it was a nick name.
Off to the Archives, I will follow up with any new information I find.
