Cass/Bluegrass Cemetery
As promised here is the report from the Cass/Bluegrass Cemetery in Montgomery County, IL. The Cass Cemetery is located on private property and deep in the woods. The cemetery is a good ½ to ¾ of a mile hike, it is very overgrown and many of the stones are covered in several inches of soil and leaf litter. What look to be wild yuccas litter the area. These yuccas are also all over the Lambeth cemetery. It would have been nice if our ancestors would have planted a nice peony instead. The yuccas do not die back in the winter and impede the search for tombstones.
The FitzJerrell/FitzJarrell’s are buried in the Cass cemetery and we revisited to obtain better pictures and check the cemetery transcription done over fifty years ago. The only real changes to the transcription were of Eli Fitzjerrell’s birth date from the 12th to the 19th and Phoebe Fitzjerrell Brown death day was the 12th of July. Daniel Fitzjerrell’s stone is broken into three pieces; the third piece (bottom) was about a foot below the rest of the stone. Tabitha Kelsay’s stone was completely covered with dirt from the last time we were there; we cleaned it off and tried to reset the stone. We did find Charlotte FitzJerrell Bewley’s stone buried about a foot in the ground, we uncovered the stone and took pictures. If you are interested in going to this cemetery I would recommend you visit in the winter. When we were there in the summer the poison oak and ticks were rampant. We asked permission at the house before you leave the blacktop, this would be a good idea due to the fact the area was littered with gun shot shells.
