Mary Wickham Kelly

  mary-wickham-needlework

Needlework was done by Mary Wickham when she was a young girl.  The inscription on the back of the framed work states it was done in 1861, Mary would have been about 7 years old at the time she completed this sampler.  There was some discussion about whether Mary could have accomplished such a project at that age.  However, from the time a young girl was old enough to hold a needle she was taught how to quilt, sew, do needlework and other appropriate household tasks.  Many thanks to the Behen family for the photos.
