Family Search Pilot
Family Search
Family Search is a family history website provide by the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). They have been online for a number of years and in the past I have used the information found only as a lead in the hunt for lost ancestors. They have recently started a pilot program which includes images of original documents. Several of these collections are also offered by Ancestry but the LDS site is free. Another huge plus is they have cross references the documents by all names on the image. For example, if you search the Ohio Death Certificates the search result will not only list the name of the deceased but other key names such as name of father, mother and spouse. Any genealogist will tell you how valuable this is, many of our female ancestors are very difficult to track if you do not know their married name.
A few of the collections I am the most excited to see are Michigan Deaths 1867-1897, this coupled with the Seeking Michigan website gives genealogist access to Michigan deaths from 1867-1920. Ohio Death Certificates 1908-1953, Toledo Dioceses Records and North Carolina Death Certificates 1906-1930.
To access this new section go to the Family Search website. On the top left you will find the drop down menu. Choose Search Records, this will give you several options. Select “Records Search Pilot”, the next screen is a map. When you click on the map it will show you what is available for the area selected. The pilot is an on going project so you might want to check the site often for further updates.
